Classic Manhattan Cocktail Recipe: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Manhattan is a sophisticated and timeless cocktail, perfect for sipping and savoring.

Yields: 1 cocktail
Prep time: 2 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces rye whiskey (or bourbon, if preferred)
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Maraschino cherry, for garnish
  • Ice

Equipment:

  • Mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger or measuring spoons
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Chilled coupe or martini glass

Step 1: Chill Your Glass

While you prepare your drink, chill your coupe or martini glass. You can do this by filling it with ice or placing it in the freezer for a few minutes.

Step 2: Add Ingredients to the Mixing Glass

Fill your mixing glass about two-thirds full with ice.

Measure and pour 2 ounces of rye whiskey into the mixing glass.

Add 1 ounce of sweet vermouth to the mixing glass.

Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixture.

Step 3: Stir the Cocktail

Using your bar spoon, gently stir the ingredients in the mixing glass. Stir in a circular motion for about 20-30 seconds. You want to chill and slightly dilute the drink without bruising the spirits (which happens with vigorous shaking).

Step 4: Strain into the Chilled Glass

Empty the ice from your chilled coupe or martini glass. Place the cocktail strainer over the mixing glass and carefully pour the Manhattan into the chilled glass, leaving the ice behind in the mixing glass.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

Garnish your Manhattan with a single maraschino cherry. Traditionally, the cherry is dropped into the glass. Avoid using bright red, artificially flavored cherries if you want a more classic taste; Luxardo or similar brandied cherries are a great choice.

Enjoy Your Classic Manhattan!
